The issue of Punk Rock.... This is a very debated and heated subject. Some say that there was never a Punk culture, that it was only a phase. But many people argue that opinion. Well let me tell you what I know from my years of experience in the issue of Punk rock.
Punk came to the music scene around the mid-1960s. These bands were first recognized as garage bands. Punk as you may know originated in England, with bands like Sex Pistols and the Ramones. At its beginning Punk wasn't mainstream and ignored the trend that other musicians were following. You may also say that Punk was a type of "Fuck off" to the music industry.
The music...Most Punk band's lyrics were bold and very blunt. At the time the rash and rude lyrics out raged governments. Like for example, "I wanna be anarchy" by the Sex Pistols. The lyrics intended anarchy and rebellion against any form of government.
The death....When it comes to the death of Punk Rock, there are many explanations. The most important of these explanations would have to be the death of Sid Vicious, the bassist of the Sex Pistols. His heroine OD, devastated the genre of Punk forever. Another leading reason that attributed to the death of Punk, was how popular Punk became. Punk was known to be the complete opposite of what Popular culture was into. But soon, Punk became exactly what every teenager wanted to listen to. Which resulted in the loss of its out cast followers, who began to realize that the music they loved, that separated them from the rest of the crowd was no longer any different from what everyone else wanted to listen to.
This was the end of the Punk era. But now, some people call themselves "Punk Rockers", and I absolutely think that's plain rubbish. How can you call yourself a "Punk Rocker" while listening to a bands like Green day? That is not punk, that is college boys trying to look and sound punk. When actually they aren't, not even one bit. To be Punk you have to do something completely different. Something that people everywhere will see or hear you and say "What the hell is that?" Now that is the true meaning of punk rock ladies and gentlemen. Thank you very much.
